I have a thyroid nodule, should I be worried that it could be cancerous ?

Thyroid nodules are quite common. Some people may have a visible nodule while others may have nodules which are felt but not seen. A few other nodules may not be seen or felt and just detected on ultrasound.

The enlargement of the thyroid is called goiter. This happens due to many reasons

  • Enlargement of the thyroid may be quite normal due to increased demand for thyroid during conditions like pregnancy and lactation
  • A few nodules may be benign known as colloid nodules
  • Nodules may also be associated with hyperfunction of the thyroid gland
  • Few nodules may be due to inflammation of the thyroid due to various conditions
  • Only a small percent of thyroid nodules are cancerous

While thyroid nodules do warrant seeking medical attention most of the nodules are harmless.
