Peritoneal surface malignancy and HIPEC
While most surgeries are performed in clearly defined anatomical landmarks cytoreductive surgery is not so. The disease can be present anywhere in the abdomen and proper anatomical knowledge of the entire abdomen is required for doing these surgeries.
HIPEC stands for Hyperthermic Intra peritoneal chemotherapy. It is a method of delivery of chemotherapy directly into the abdomen. HIPEC is generally combined with cytoreductive surgery
Performing these surgeries requires considerable expertise
Dr Anil Kamath is specially trained to surgically treat these conditions. After his MCh, Dr Kamath did a fellowship on peritoneal surface malignancies from Washington cancer centre and trained under Dr Paul sugarbaker who is considered as one of the doyens of these procedures.
